Rare Resolve: Dominic’s Greatest Comeback – Hemophilia A

A game plan for navigating life with a bleeding disorder

Dominic was 14 when his world was flipped upside down. One moment, he was the fastest kid on the field, the go-to player for the last-minute score. The next, he was in a hospital room, hearing a word that changed everything—hemophilia. Dominic? A bleeding disorder? The kid who spent more time running drills than sitting still?

His parents noticed the bruises—deep, dark, and persisting longer than they should. The occasional swollen knee seemed worse than a typical sports injury. Then came the day he took a hard fall during an eighth-grade track meet, and the bleeding wouldn’t stop.

Tests confirmed it: Dominic was diagnosed with hemophilia A after seeking treatment for an iliopsoas muscle bleed. This meant his body lacked factor VIII, a protein crucial for blood clotting. Without it, even a minor injury—like a bruise or a fall—could turn serious, leading to prolonged internal bleeding. Left untreated, these bleeds can cause pain, swelling, and long-term joint damage, making mobility harder over time.

From Sidelines to Strategy

Dominic’s hemophilia A diagnosis hit harder than any opponent ever had. No more sports, no more roughhousing, no more normal. Every scrape, every bruise, every fall now carried a risk he’d never considered. Was he really supposed to sit on the sidelines for the rest of his life—or was there another way forward?

It didn’t take long for Dominic to find his answer—and he didn’t have to accept defeat. His medical team didn’t just explain hemophilia. They gave him the tools to manage it with a positive mindset. And with the right treatment and knowledge, he could remain active and still push his limits. Hemophilia wasn’t the end—it was just another one of life’s challenges to manage. “Once I learned how to handle it, I wasn’t afraid. It wasn’t the end. I just kept living my life,” he says.

New Playbook, New Possibilities

When Dominic was 16, he met Jessica Crews-Simpson, his Patient Coordinator at PromptCare. She had years of experience teaching kids, teens, and families how to take control of their bleeding disorder. She helped him schedule appointments, made sure he had factor medication on hand, and helped him understand staying on top of his therapy meant more freedom, not less—an entire new playbook that kept him in control.

That playbook centered around learning prophylactic factor therapy—or regular infusions of recombinant factor VIII to prevent spontaneous bleeds and protect his joints. Instead of reacting to injuries, he could now stay ahead of them. But there was a catch: he had to learn how to self-infuse. He knew he wasn’t sidelined—he just had to play smarter.

Self-infusion. At first, the idea of finding his own vein with a needle was terrifying. But with patience, guidance, and a few shaky attempts, he got it. He learned when to infuse, how to recognize a bleed, and what precautions to take before practice. Hemophilia was just a condition that required strategy.

Training Smart, Playing Hard

Track and swimming became Dominic’s outlet. Sprinting, hurdles, and freestyle—events where explosive movements mattered more than contact. He learned to listen to his body, to recognize when a joint felt “off,” and to act fast. PromptCare made sure his factor medication and supplies were always stocked, and his care team adjusted his regimen as needed. He wasn’t just playing—he was thriving.

Now, as an adult, Dominic does more than just live with hemophilia—he helps others do the same. Every summer, he volunteers at a hemophilia education camp, guiding kids through the same fears he once had. He teaches others how to self-infuse with confidence, manage their own treatment, and approach sports safely. He sees himself in the nervous 10-year-old gripping a syringe for the first time, in the teenager asking if he’ll ever play sports again. He tells them what he realized quickly: “You’re in control. You can do this.”

A Lifetime of Wins

Dominic still runs, plays sports, and lives an active life. He still competes. And he follows the latest advancements in extended half-life factor therapy and gene research, staying informed about what’s next. He understands hemophilia treatment is constantly evolving, just like the athletes who refuse to let it hold them back.

Hemophilia A changed Dominic’s life, but it doesn’t define it. Instead, it gives him a new purpose, a new community, and a new way to win
