Shawn’s Story: From Chronic Illness to Endless Possibility – CVID

Blazing a trail across the country, this road warrior left her immune deficiency in the dust

Shawn has always chased adventure. Road trips, mountain air, volunteer work in disaster zones—she lives to move and help. But her body rarely kept up. Since childhood, she cycled through relentless infections—sinus issues, earaches, sore throats, flu-like fatigue. No matter the season or the circumstance, she was sick.

She tried everything. Specialists, over-the-counter meds, changes to her diet. Nothing stuck. “It felt like I’d never known anything but being unwell,” Shawn says. Her zest for life was dimming—and those closest to her sensed it. Her husband, Dan, who she met volunteering after a tragedy, worried most. They’d once driven across the country to help after Hurricane Katrina. Now, she could barely leave the house.

What Is CVID? Understanding a Rare Immune Disorder

In 2012, Shawn finally got a diagnosis: Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID), a rare immune disorder that leaves the body unable to produce enough antibodies to fight infection. For Shawn, this explained the years of unexplained illness. Identifying it was a relief—but managing it was the hard part. She wanted more than just an answer. She needed a permanent solution that would give her back the light she’d lost.

Shawn’s immunologist introduced her to IVIg—intravenous immunoglobulin therapy, a treatment rising in popularity for immune disorders like hers. IVIg treatments work by delivering healthy antibodies from donated plasma to help boost the immune system. Infusions are typically administered every few weeks and can take several hours. Though it sounded intimidating, Shawn was told she was a strong candidate—and recommended home infusions through PromptCare.

Home Infusion Therapy: Personalized, Consistent, Compassionate

From the moment she scheduled her first treatment with PromptCare, Shawn knew she was in the right hands. “It was clear everyone at PromptCare genuinely wanted me to feel better—and stay better,” she says. She was surprised by how seamless it all felt. The skilled infusion nurses adapted to her schedule, made her comfortable, and genuinely wanted her to thrive. It was the first time in years of appointments and waiting rooms she felt a sense of peace.

Now, Shawn looks forward to her monthly in-home infusions, some lasting up to seven hours. What could’ve been a disruption has become a routine she embraces. Her infusion nurse has become a steady presence and a friend, someone she trusts as much for her medical skills as for her conversation and encouragement.

Living Well with CVID: A New Chapter Begins

Best of all, Shawn is finally well—and free. With her symptoms under control and access to around-the-clock care and medication, even while she’s traveling, the fear that once shadowed her every move is gone. “It’s a peace of mind I never thought I’d have,” she says. “I can actually enjoy my life without planning around my illness.”

Her calendar proves it. This summer, she and Dan are headed west to explore Colorado’s peaks, venture off-road in their 4×4, hike the wild beauty of the Canadian Rockies, and camp under the stars with their dog, Moqui. Every destination is a celebration—not just of the places she’s heading to, but of the resilience it took to get there.

Shawn isn’t just back on her feet—she’s back behind the wheel with the windows down. She’s chasing sunrises, exploring trails, and rediscovering old joys. “For the first time in a long time, I feel unstoppable,” she says. One thing is for sure—she’s not slowing down, and she’s ready for her next adventure.
